Two attacking changes could make Manchester United stronger vs Newcastle

Man United are back at Wembley in a cup final for the first time since 2018 and here are five things to look out for against Newcastle.

Time is of the essence

It cannot be a coincidence in a week Erik ten Hag met Sir Alex Ferguson for dinner he then effectively applied pressure on a referee ahead of Manchester United's biggest game of the season.

Ten Hag described Newcastle as "annoying... they try to annoy you". When asked if he specifically meant time-wasting, Ten Hag confirmed that was the case.

In fairness to Newcastle, they are not the lowest in the league for the average time the ball is in play during their matches. Leeds are. Then it's Newcastle.

Newcastle are more renowned for it as they are having, by their standards, a successful season and their goalkeeper, Nick Pope, is infamous for it. In Newcastle's goalless draw with Arsenal, the ball was in play for 43 minutes and 17 seconds of the 90.

Referee David Coote and the fourth official Simon Hooper have been forewarned to ensure the ball is not dead as often as it is when Newcastle play.

Does Weghorst continue?

Eleven games and one goal is a disastrous run for any striker, never mind a United striker. United have only lost once since Wout Weghorst defected from Besiktas on loan but he is failing to fulfil the role he was signed for; scoring goals.

Weghorst has struggled for chances during his 11 starts yet last week struck tamely with one-on-ones against Barcelona and Leicester. On Thursday night, his removal sparked United's comeback in their second leg defeat of Barca.

If Weghorst is to be dropped, the caveat is United are limited as to their game-changers. They can 'only' name nine substitutes and recent matches have reinforced how vital their game-changers are off the bench.

Much depends on Marcus Rashford's fitness but if he is available, an attacking quartet of Rashford, Weghorst, Antony and Bruno Fernandes with Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho in reserve would be the percentage play.

Is Rashford fit?

That is the question United fans will be asking on the trains, buses and cars down to Wembley. Rashford has scored 16 goals in his last 18 games and has 24 club goals for the season. United's next highest scorer, Bruno Fernandes, is on seven.

Wan-Bissaka or Dalot?

Aaron Wan-Bissaka's withdrawal halfway through the second half against Barcelona was a surprise as he rekindled his unlikely partnership with Antony. Wan-Bissaka was serenaded for the first time at Old Trafford as he made his way back to the dugout.

Wan-Bissaka is a renascent right-back yet Dalot's attacking instincts are more naturally aligned with Ten Hag and the Portuguese cannot be dismissed as mere back-up after two ill-timed injuries.

Allan Saint-Maximin is a mercurial footballer and scored brilliantly against United last season, which may ensure Wan-Bissaka continues at right-back.

The boys from Brazil

Five Brazilians are likely to start at Wembley as Bruno Guimaraes is back from suspension for Newcastle and set to be alongside Joelinton. They are bound to be pitted against Casemiro and the indefatigable Fred.

Fred produced one of his finest performances against Barcelona in midweek and even in two patchy performances against Leicester and Barcelona last week he laid on goals for Marcus Rashford.
